Book Recommendation for August: What To Add In Your August Reading List, #JFH Suggests

August 3, 2017 | by ashish963@gmail.com

One of the best pleasures in life is reading a book that has grabbed your full attention and which keeps you longing for more. There so many books out there in the world and so many more that keep coming. As a person who likes to read, the idea of not being able to finish every book in the planet is probably one of the saddest thoughts of them all.

However, while we are still here, why not indulge in these pieces of literary jewels as much as we can. In this post, I will be sharing with you 6 book suggestions that you can add in your to-read list for the month of August. There is something in this list for every genre of book, so hope you enjoy these suggestions and the books as well.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

I will start off the list with one of my all time favorite novels and it is In Cold Blood by Truman Capote; a true crime novel to end all true crime novels. This book is one of the best non-fiction novels to be ever written.

It tells the story of the massacre of the Clutter family in the small town of Holcomb in Kansas, but that isn’t what makes this book a work of art, worth re-reading a hundred times. What makes this book stand out is that the story is told from the point of view of the killers of the family, the members of the community of Holcomb, the detectives who were investigating the murder, and the members of the murdered family themselves.

Not once in this 343 page book is the name of the author mentioned or how he worked to find the information that is written in this book. The story, though a non-fictional one, is told in such a way that the reader would feel as if they are reading a fiction book that is narrating a murder mystery.

The Surgeon of Crowthorne by Simon Winchester

Following on the non-fiction note is yet another marvellous piece of literature which tells the story of how the Oxford dictionary was made. It’s interesting how some of the best reads that you have in your life is from books you bought without planning to. Like for example, this book fell on me from the bookshelf whilst I was reaching for another book. Call it divine intervention, but I’m glad I was able to discover this book and the story it tells of how the makers of the Oxford English dictionary took submissions for words from the common people, and one such contributor who had a major hand in the making of the dictionary, turned out to be an inmate of an asylum for the criminally insane. This unforgettable story of the madness and genius that contributed to one of the greatest literary achievements in the history of English letters is something everyone should have in their reading list.

1984 by George Orwell

Book 1986 by George Orwell

If you think the dystopian genre became famous after Hunger Games, then think again. Nineteen Eighty-four was written by George Orwell in the year 1949, and still continues to be the great modern classic of “negative utopia”. An astonishingly original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing, from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions. Taking into account the current political scenario in our country and the world, with governments trying to find new ways to control their citizens, 1984 is a book that doesn’t have a better time to be read than now.

Full Dark No Stars by Stephen King

The best thing to do on a stormy night is stay indoors and read Stephen King. In the past, I had only heard of Stephen King and his horror books, but Full Dark no Stars was the first one that I had read. It is a collection of 4 short stories or “novellas”, each more twisted than the one before. All the 4 stories aren’t exactly supernatural horror like you would expect, but rather more like play-with-your-psyche kind of horror. The first novella tells the story of a man whose wife wants him to sell off their farm land and move to the city, but since he likes the farm life, he doesn’t want to do so. So he kills his wife and makes it look like she ran away, but what plagues him after committing the murder is far worse. The second novella is about a mystery writer who whilst coming back from a speaking engagement takes a shortcut home with dire consequences. The third story is about a man suffering from cancer, who decides to make a deal with the devil but as always, there is a price to pay. The novella is about a woman who learns about her husband’s dark secret when she literally stumbles upon a box under a worktable in the garage.

If you like to read fantasy books of the young adult genre, then the first book by Cassandra Clare in her bestselling Mortal Instruments series is what you need in your life.

City of Bones tells the story of Clary Fray who had thought her entire life that she was just another ordinary human from New York, with an ordinary family, until she goes to the Pandemonium club and witnesses a murder –committed by 3 teenagers covered with strange tattoos. What follows is the disappearance of her mother, demons attacking her home, and the revelation that she is a Shadowhunter, a warrior species who are half human half angel, who were put on this earth to fight against demons and keep it safe. This series is engrossing, entertaining, fierce, and will take the readers on a ride that they wouldn’t want to end.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

The last suggestion in our August list is a classic by Tolstoy, a Russian author whose words and writing will enthral you till the end. Anna Karenina is Tolstoy’s classic story of doomed love, which tells the story of its heroine, the unhappily married Anna Karenina, and her tragic affair with dashing Count Vronsky. In their world, frivolous liaisons are common, but Anna and Vronsky’s consuming passion makes them a target for scorn and leads to Anna’s increasing isolation. The heartbreaking course of their relationship contrasts sharply with the colourful swirl of friends and family members who surround them. This book is a masterpiece not only because of the unforgettable woman at its core and the stark drama of her fate, but also because it explores and illuminates the deepest questions about how to live a fulfilled life.
