Periods are an important part of girl’s life. Yes, we don’t like it but we need it. Having regular periods is a sign of good health. But sometimes, things can go a little wild and you may end up missing your periods.

The first thing that pops out in a girl’s mind when she misses her periods is, “Am I pregnant?”

Well, to answer this question, let’s take a look back. Have you been sexually active during the past few weeks? If yes, did you use protection? If your answer is no to protection, then there are chances you may be pregnant. Even if you had used protection, it is recommended to take a pregnancy test.

If you’re are not sexually active or you just have oral sex (no touching of genitals in any way), then you don’t have to worry about pregnancy. But you do have to worry about your periods.

There are many reasons as to why a girl misses her periods. What usually happens is, when you miss your periods once in a blue moon, it’s no big deal. But if this irregularity has been occurring for a prolonged time, it may be a sign of something serious. But I am not here to scare you.

Let’s have a look at five reasons why you missed your periods:

Stress

Stress is one of the major reasons why you may have missed your period. Stresses may include physical stress for athletes, emotional stress, severe chronic diseases, and nutritional issues or eating disorders,” says Dr. Sharon Lahiri, an endocrinologist at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. “This disorder is associated with low estrogen levels.” Our lifestyle today is extremely stressful. Work pressure, deadlines, money, family responsibilities, personal problems, the stress causing factors are unending. And these factors may result in the delay of your periods

Weight

Excessive weight loss and weight gain may also have an effect on your periods. Excessive exercise for weight loss or training, including ballet, running and gymnastics, also produce irregular periods. Decreased body fat, poor diet, stress and heavy exercise can halt periods. Similarly, even weight gain can have an effect on your health.

Health Disorders

You may or may not be aware of some of the disorders in your bodily functions. If you are suffering from PCOS – Polysystic Ovarian Syndrome, chronic diseases like celic, thyroid irregularity, etc., chances are your period may skip a visit. These disorders can be treated and your cycle will be back on track. Even premature menopause can also cause irregular periods.  Other diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, tuberculosis, liver disease, and diabetes can cause missed or irregular periods, although this is rare. However, if any of these diseases are present, you will usually have other symptoms besides menstrual irregularities. Sometimes, if you have just recovered or are suffering from basic illness like cold, fever, etc., you may miss your periods.

Pills

Taking a new medication or changing the dosage on an existing medication can affect all aspects of your body’s well-being, including your menstrual cycle. Medications, such as hormonal birth control methods, which may cause lighter, less frequent, more frequent or skipped periods. Sometimes, illegal drug use can also cause this problem.

Other Factors

Some other minor factors include breast feeding, synced cycles, recent miscarriage or abortion, eating disorders, increased exercise, travel, etc. can also cause missed periods. Sometimes it can be a miscalculation on your part about the dates.

One missed or late period isn’t something to stress over. Don’t stress out! That can affect your body and your nervous system into combat mode.
